Known as the only black plastic surgeon in Beverly Hills, with celebrities flocking to him for surgery, Dr. Michael Obeng is in South Africa as part of an initiative to provide free reconstructive surgery to children and adults.
The Restore initiative, established in 2008, will see individuals in various countries, with disfiguring deformities from birth, accident, and diseases, receiving surgery.
Obeng says plastic surgery is not all glitz and glam. Reconstructive surgery makes up the bulk of surgery across the globe.
Since 2008 we have been to over seven different countries in over three different continents. We have done over 700 surgeries.
— Dr. Michael Obeng, Plastic surgeon
If you were to put a price tag on it, we are talking about 35 million dollars, all for free and I have personally donated about 300 000 dollars to get Restore going.— Dr. Michael Obeng, Plastic surgeon
Obeng says the organisation is aiming to reach more countries.
He says people can donate to the initiative by visiting the website.
Not just money, we are also looking for big partnerships.— Dr. Michael Obeng, Plastic surgeon
